Blogging Tips: Advertising Program – MMA Adnet

Lately, I have been trying out different advertising and affiliate programs and I am going to be writing some articles on the success and details of the various programs. The first one that I am going to start with is MMA Ad Network, which is one of the primary advertisers on my website. There are a couple things that MMA Adnet does well which I will discuss in detail. In future articles, I will also discuss Shareasale.com, CommissionJunction.com, Google Adsense and Muay Thai Stuff.com. Here are some of the features of MMA Adnetwork.

MMA Centric Ads

One of the things that I like about MMA Adnet is most of the ads in the site are MMA Centric. What that means is that they are either promoting MMA Fighters, products, supplements or things like that. Some examples include Shawn Carwin, Efrain Escudero and Warrior Clothing. They also have some non MMA Centric ads, that kind of target the same general demographics (Males 18-35), such as products on Amazon.com, speaker systems, etc. Occisionally, there are some ads which are totally out of the target market, such as the Richard Dawkins.net ads, but hey, they are paying for the ad space, so I can’t complain.

Pay Per Impression

The biggest selling point from a publishers standpoint (a publisher is a person who displays the ads on their website) is that you end up getting paid per impression as opposed to paid per click. Pay Per Click programs usually work that if someone sees an ad they like while they are on your site and click it, you get paid a small commission. The down side to that is that someone may see an ad 20 times before they actually click on it, and when they do actually click, it may not be on your website. With Pay Per Impression, you get paid every time an ad displays on your site. This method works a lot better when the ads are graphic based, as opposed to text based like Google.

Now, MMA Adnetwork does not have a conventional method for determining payment per impression. In a conventional method, you get paid per every 1000 impressions, usually a small amount such as $1-2 dollars. However I have found that a lot of programs have minimum traffic requirements to be included in their program. MMA Adnet determines the payment by your overall percentage of impressions for the month, and pays out accordingly. I will go into detail about payment later.

One final point that I like is that MMA Adnet does not currently have any limitations as to the number of ads you can display on a page. For example, Google will only allow 3 ads on a page, and after that, if you display more ads, they just show up as blank space. With MMA Adnet you can fill all the unused ad space on your pages with 1 source.

Your Own Ad Placement

MMA Adnet also allows every affiliate to submit 1 468×60 banner that is circulated into rotation for placement on the ad network. As a result, your ad is displayed on other MMA based websites. So far in the 2 months I have been a part of the network, my banner has been displayed 23,000 times and I have received 40 click throughs from those impressions. Basically, it’s free advertising that can bring additional traffic and fans to the website. That’s a nice little bonus.

Back End Data

You may be wondering how I was able to determine how many times my banner has been displayed and clicked. Well, MMA Adnet has a back end which gives you a certain amount of data. This section isn’t as transparent as I would like, but they may be upgrading this down the road. Basically, you can see the amount of impressions and clicks of your banner, and you can also see the amount of impressions and click on the ads displayed on your site. The one thing that I feel is missing is some type of payment approximation based on your stats. Even if this number was not exact, they could still give you a rough idea of how much you could expect.

I understand that one reason they can’t do that is two part. First of all, traffic is not always steady. One day 1,000 impressions might be 2% of the overall traffic, and the next day that same 1,000 impressions might be 5% of the overall traffic, so your percentage for the month will vary. The second reason they can’t do that is because some of their ads are affiliate based, and not paid on a flat rate. For example, one of the Amazon ads only pays out if someone clicks and then purchases products from Amazon during their shopping visit. That number can’t be determined into the totals in a back end program.

One possible soultion for this would be as follows. In the beginning of the month, the Adnetwork knows how much ad space they have sold as income for the month at the start. They could take that number (lets says it’s $3000 bucks) and divide that by the days of the month (let’s say 30 to keep it simple). That would mean the total pay out per day is $100. Then they can take that $100 and multiple it by your percentage of the total ads for that day. To keep the math simple, let’s say I had 5% of the total ads for a day, that would mean that I earned $5 for that day.

Of course, it would be understood by everyone (if it was clearly explained and transparent) that this is an approximate total for earnings and that actual results may vary. This number could end up being more or less depending on the variables of overall traffic for the month, affiliate ads, and additional ad space sold during the month. I think something like that would be a nice feature that still needs to be added to the back end.

Payment

I originally signed up for the Ad Network towards the end of April, and I did not earn much from advertising during that month. I had to wait until I received my May earnings until I could get a rough idea of how much my earnings were. Before I get into my earnings, let me tell you some features of the way the payments work. First off, payments are made directly through Pay Pal if your total earnings are over $10. If the earnings are less than $10, they are carried over to the next month. Also, your payments are not paid out until the 15th of the following month, so my Payments for May (and the holdings from April) were not received until June 15th.

During the month of May, I had about 104,000 ad impressions. When you include my ad impressions from April, which was just over 15,000, my total for the 2 months was about 120,000 impressions. I ended up getting a payment of a little over $22 USD for that time frame. My total percentage of the ad network was about 2%. Based on those numbers I can figure out that the total pay outs last month were probably around $1000.

While the $22 isn’t much, the optimistic view is that the network will continue to grow and the pay outs will continue to grow along with that. If you couple that in with the bonus of the free traffic, the MMA Adnetwork has a pretty good thing going. If they can continue to make upgrades to the network while brining in more clients, it is something I will love to continue to be a part of.
