Blogging Tips: The Many Hats Of Being A Blogger

If you plan to try to work as a blogger to generate even a small supplemental income, there are many “hats you must wear”. These roles, or “hats” include being a: Writer, Editor, Researcher, Internet Marketer, SEO Guru, and in most cases an Affilate Publisher. In a typical day as a blogger, you can research an article, write the article, edit it, post the article to some social bookmarking sites, add some forum and blog posts, read up on the newest marketing technique that you haven’t learned, improve your site/posts for Search Engines, add some affiliate links and respond to any comments or emails you have received, and finally, start the process all over again. I am going to briefly discuss each of the roles listed above in this article.
Writer
This is probably the most enjoyable part of being a blogger. If you don’t like writing articles, or don’t really have anything to say, then you should consider doing something else. But having something to say isn’t enough, you have to have an interesting way to say it, and hopefully a target audience to say it to. One of the down falls to being a writer, is you can go into what some people call a “writers block”. I prefer to think of this as a reason to get out and do more research. Research can be in the form of reading and gathering information, doing a physical activity, or experimenting with a theory you have developed. One of the most important parts of writing is to write about a topic or subject that interests you, or that you are knowledgable in. This will decrease the amount of “block time” and increase your enjoyment out of writing.
Editor
Take my advice… Read your article and Re-read it before you publish it, and start promoting it to various websites. Nothing will cause more doubt in the minds of your readers than an article with inaccurate or choppy information. Equally important is spelling and grammar mistakes. Read your article a couple times and make sure that it makes sense, and is error free.
Researcher
Being good at doing research is an important part of being a blogger, unless your blog is just completely 100% personal and just a bunch of your ramblings. In most cases, if you are talking about a topic which you have some knowledge or experience in, then in essence, you have done research on it, whether it is from reading or from actual experience. Another reason you need to be good at doing research is because you need to do reseach on the newest promotion and Search Engine Optimization techniques, which is an important part of getting yourself traffic.
Internet Marketer
One of the necessary parts of maintaining a successful blog is that you need traffic. The Internet is such a big place, that you need to provide people with a way to find you. Basically you will have to employ several techniques so that people will know you exist on the web. It can be anything from placing videos on Youtube to posting on different message boards to swapping links with your favorite site or blog. There are many successful techniques, and while I won’t go into all of them now, I will say that it is necessary that you spend a lot of time utilizing them (especially in the beginning) until you start to get more traffic from Search Engines.
SEO Guru
SEO is an acronym for Search Engine Optimization. There is a broad range of techniques that fall under the SEO umbrella. SEO can range from making sure you are using the best keywords for your site, to building back links to increase your Google Page Rank. The best advice I ever saw regarding SEO was this “Read, Re-read and experiment.” Basically, you need to do a lot of Research (see above) and then go through a bunch of trial and error efforts to become more of a presence on the Internet.
Affiliate Publisher
If you have a free blog on a website such as Blogger or WordPress.com, then your goal is just to discuss whatever topic you wish with no additional secondary benefit. However, most people who host own blog have a cost (overhead) the same as you would if you opened up a retail store. You have to pay rent if you open up a store, and you have to pay for hosting if you open up a website. Even if your goal isn’t to live independently off of your affiliate earnings, you might like to make enough to off set your hosting fees. In that case, you will have to look into some form of being an affiliate publisher. Google Adsense is the most popular, since you don’t really sell a product, only adspace. However, there are many other affiliate sites such as Commission Junction, Shareasale, ClickBank and more. In my particular case, since my genre is geared towards Mixed Martial Arts, there are even some MMA Specific ones such as MMA Adnet and MMAMoney.com
