Po to face Suquite

Mixed martial arts fighter Gino “The Projectile” Po of the Projectile’s Pit Muay Thai Club in Talamban will face Junrey Suquite of the Durex Dragons Lapu-Lapu in the main event of the Muay Thai Challenge 2012 on May 20 at the J Center Mall in Mandaue City.

Po and Suquite will battle in the 140lb division.

Po is coming from an impressive victory last February in the Fight Ground III championships against Ronny Calunsag.

“Even though this is just an exhibition fight, I will do my best to win because I know that Suquite is tough and skillful inside the ring,” said Po during yesterday’s official launching of the event at the J Center Mall activity area. “I’ve been preparing for this fight for a while so I am not afraid to fight him.”

Also present in the launching was Michael Arquillano, director of the Muay Thai Association of the Philippines-Cebu chapter.

“We want to promote the art of Muay Thai to the Cebuanos because we also wanted them to engage in this sport,” said Arquillano.

Arquillano is planning to hold a tournament on a monthly basis. This is a prepare for the upcoming Muay Thai Asian Games set to happen later this year.

Aside from Po and Suquite’s fight, Neil Bacatan will also face Kerk Florida of the ATC Kick Boxing club in the 122lbs division.

Leo Rodrigo of Bullet Muay Thai will go up against John Edu Torbiso of the Durex Dragons in the junior featherweight division. Moses Nadalo also from Bullet Muay Thai will clash Edcel Julom of ATC Kick Boxing in the 140lbs division.

There will also be several other bouts featured during the event, which will be free to the public. Fights start at 6 p.m.

Super Fight League

Super Fight League

Having recently made her MMA debut on the On Top 4 card, where she won by first round TKO, Joanne Calderwood has already started to show that she will be a force to be reckoned with inside the cage. Not that that should come as a surprise given that shes already a world class Muay Thai fighter with a string of titles to her name and a well developed ground game from her coaches at Glasgows Griphouse gym its only a matter of time before she finds herself at the top of the MMA game. The next step on that journey being a trip to India for The Super Fight Leagues third card and a meeting with Ukrainian prospect Lena Ovchynnikova. We caught up with Joanne to see how her preperations were coming along.

Hiya Joanne and congratulations on getting such a high profile fight for your second MMA bout, looking forward to it?

Yeah im looking forward to it, I love fighting. The fact that im getting to travel and see India a bit is a nice bonus also.

Fighting in India will be somewhat different to Glasgow where you made your debut, do you think thatll be a factor?

It wont be a factor at all, Ive traveled and fought in the past as well as spent a lot of time in Thailand fighting on some big events like the Queens Birthday Show. The crowd when I made my debut in Glasgow was incredible, and from what Ive seen of the first two Super Fight League shows the crowd and the show will be excellent.

Despite being only 1-0 in MMA youre a world class Kickboxer and a European champion in that discipline, how much has that experience helped you in MMA, both technique wise and dealing with pressure?

Technique wise my style of Muay Thai suits MMA, i like to be aggressive and look to finish fights and its been very successful up until now. In terms of pressure ive been competiting at the highest level of Muay Thai for a while now on big shows often having to travel. With fights the only pressure i feel is the pressure i put on myself to perform which brings out the best in me.

Organic fight tension

Organic fight tension

Mr Connell adds that as an unintended benefit, people even respect his kwam pen Thai, or Thainess, because of it. Sometimes he turns up for trade or policy meetings clearly brandishing the after-effects of physical punishment.

There have been a few times. Ive tried to cover as best I could, he says. Family and work commitments mean he doesnt participate as often as he once did, for one thing because of the age factor. Many boxers are battered through short-lived careers in muay Thai and the fighters are usually much younger.

Once you develop to a certain mental level you are there, but its extremely taxing fitness wise, and its a lot harder to recover now, he admits. Still, you can regularly catch him training and running through the back sois off Sukhumvit road.

Its for the discipline and its like a drug, he says enthusiastically. If hes not in the ring, he enjoys watching a live contest on a Friday night at Lumpini stadium, with his wife and sometimes his coach or friends from the gym. When I can get a babysitter, he adds, referring to his two daughters, aged four years and 18 months, who he plans to take along when they are older.

Mr Connell referred to the music, a blend of drums and cymbals which elevates in pace to match the tension of the fight, as organic. On special nights, such as the Queens birthday on August 12 or National Muay Thai Day on March 17, he mixes the best of both worlds, while holding his job in high esteem. Hell enjoy the fight as always, yet often as a representative of the embassy, dressed in a suit instead of a boxing kit.

Out of respect for the post, he says.
